rice hats in the big city

Ho Chi Minh City is a sprawling metropolis that looks absolutely endless. One can ride on motorbike for 45 minutes in almost any direction and still be in a distinctly urban setting.

The geographical magnitude of the city means we are a good distance from any of Vietnam's famous rice fields. Despite the distance and the urban environment of the city, the iconic rice paddy hats are abundant in Saigon. Today, I saw an American student who looked about my age wearing one of these rice hats along with his athletic gear. I don't think that will be my next look, but if that for some reason changes I think I will just turn in my passport.
