the mekong delta

Two hours south of Saigon is the Mekong Delta. The delta is a fairly poor region of the country and many of its inhabitants live on boats that float around on the delta's tributaries.

The whole area seems like a movie set for Heart of Darkness, which gives it a surreal quality.

Fishing in the mud for these:

which we ate for lunch.

Wooden canoes/rafts took us from one part of an island to connect with the main river. On the way it started downpouring, so the Vietnamese promptly outfitted me with a poncho..... and rice paddy hat. Here you go, Mom, a photo of me in the hat.

Swimming water buffalo and rain on the Mekong.
